Viareggio concentrates the charms of the Tuscan shores. Beauty and Dolce Vita characterize this seaside city which has no less than 10 kilometres of beach. Situated in the north of Tuscany, on the Ligurian Sea, the town was founded in the first half of the 16th century. At that time, it was the only access to the sea for the Republic of Lucca. From this period remains the Torre Matilde, a defensive fortification built by the Lucca people in 1541 to combat pirate attacks. Viareggio is also famous for its carnival which is one of the most important in Italy.
