Your ship will then set a course northward to carry you to Madeira, a paradise for hiking enthusiasts. After a call in Santa Cruz de La Palma, Le Dumont d’Urville will then drop anchor at La Gomera. This tiny island with lush vegetation is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its biosphere reserve. This island is also renowned for its whistling language, Silbo, that the inhabitants use to communicate from one valley to another.
Your cruise will continue in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Dominated by Spain’s tallest peak, Mount Teide, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this charming volcanic island offers a great variety of landscapes.

David Biraud
Originally from La Roche-sur-Yon in the Vendée, David Biraud began his training in cooking in 1989 before becoming fascinated by oenology and wanting to complete his course in 1994 with a complementary mention in sommellerie.
David Biraud took his first steps as a commis sommelier at L'Arpège with Alain Passard, then in 1995, he became a sommelier at the restaurant Les Ambassadeurs at the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, where he was able to collaborate with the chefs Christian Constant, Dominique Bouchet, Jean-François Piège and Christopher Hache.
In 2000, at the age of 28, he was promoted to head sommelier at the Hôtel de Crillon. In March 2011, when the hotel opened, he joined the Mandarin Oriental in Paris as head sommelier and restaurant manager in the Michelin-starred Sur Mesure restaurant, where chef Thierry Marx works.
David developed a taste for competition early in his career. He went on to win a series of national awards, such as the 1998 Ruinart Trophy for the best young sommelier in France and the Best Sommelier of France competition in 2002 and Best Worker of France in 2004.
In 2010 and 2013, he came second in the Best Sommelier of Europe competition, and in 2016 in the Best Sommelier of the World competition.
In February 2018, he qualified to represent France once again in the final of the 2019 World's Best Sommelier competition. He has in fact defended the French colours in this competition four times in a row: in 2010 in Santiago (Chile), in 2013 in Tokyo (Japan), in 2016 in Mendoza (Argentina) and in 2019 in Antwerp (Belgium). In the 2019 edition, he reached the semi-final and finished 12th in the competition. He then decided to stop competing in sommelier competitions for good in order to devote himself to other projects in the world of wine and to his family.

Founded in 1493 by the conquistador Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, the city has preserved a large and atypical architectural heritage from its colonial past, with its traditional Canarian houses adorned with brightly coloured wooden balconies, its cobbled streets, its sumptuous palaces and its numerous religious buildings. The Santa Catalina Castle is the symbol of the city. This 16th century military fortification helped defend the city from repeated attacks by French privateers.

This unique ecosystem, common a few million years ago in the tropics, forms the Garajonay National Park, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like the birds, the Guanches contribute to the poetry of the island too, with their whistled language called Silbo. Enjoy an introduction to Fuerteventura, including the Cheese museum in Antigua, La Gayria Eco Museum, the Goat Farm and the Aloe Vera Farm in Tiscaminita.
The tour departs from the pier in Puerto del Rosario, board your coach and start your tour heading towards the Cheese Museum in Antigua, where you will discover the island through its rich cheese making tradition. During the visit you will have a chance to sample some of the goats cheese yourself. The museum has various areas to discover. Then, you will find out about the islands volcanic origins, its fauna and flora and the Majorera goats and their famous cheese, all organised around a central patio. The museum is also home to the original Antigua Windmill, found in perfect working condition. Don´t miss the chance to enjoy the cactus garden, a green treasure with species which only grow on this island as well as other species from all over the world.
Continue to La Gayria Eco Museum. La Gayría is a rural estate of 55,000 square meters, which in the 18th century was a manor house with traditional stone architecture, around a central patio protected from the wind, which today is an open-air museum of unique implements and utensils. In the center of the island and with views of the last volcano of Gayría, today it is a farm where you can enjoy rest, simple experiences, garden products, get to know the local culture, and in a special way the nature of Fuerteventura.
You will have the chance to taste some of the local products before heading to your next stop, the Aloe Vera Farm.
Thanks to its volcanic soils, the Canary Islands are an ideal environment for the cultivation of aloe. At the farm, you will have an introduction as well as a demonstration of the plant’s formation and healing properties. You will also have the opportunity to sample the products or simply take a stroll through the valley to enjoy the great views.

During the past 20 years Fuerteventura has been famous for its 72 km of sandy beaches – over the past few years this has changed. More and more people are now discovering the island’s excellent conditions for nature walks, especially during the winter season, when the mountain range of Betancuria can turn into a green oasis full of flowers. Just as Betancuria was the very first capital of the Canary Islands, the mountains of this area are the oldest of the whole archipelago! The plutonic rocks are a fascinating theme to this walk.
Board your coach and drive to Vega de Rio Palma to begin the first part of your hike. Those, who are interested, can see the Virgen de la Peña, the islands patron in the church nearby.
Later, you will pass a former water reservoir which today is a nature reserve where there’s the chance to see eagles and maybe one of the last surviving Canarian vultures. Endemic plants, unique geological formations and the fact that in this gorge the sculpture of the island’s saint was rediscovered, make this walk one of the most important of the island. The tour ends in a fishing village on the west coast – Ajuy (sea level). It was one of the very first harbours in the history of Fuerteventura and it’s a ‘mecca’ for geologists from all over the world. Recently, the old limestone furnaces have been restored; there is an access to the caves, a fascinating protected beach and several typical local bars where you can relax.
After this adventure, you will reboard your coach and drive back to your ship.

One of the best ways to see the interior of the island and to get to know Madeira a little better is to walk along one of the footpaths alongside the unique and complex Madeiran irrigation system called levadas. These channels have been dug by hand into the mountainside in the 19th century, to carry water from high up in the mountains down to the fields and villages below.
Enjoy a leisurely walk through the emerald green paradise valley with captivating views over quaint isolated villages and Camacha. The flower lined levada trickles along underneath a canopy of Eucalyptus and Oak trees. Enjoy the abundant flora and patchwork landscape that makes this walk delightful.
You will firstly be taken to Vale Paraiso to begin the first part of the walk - a gentle stroll, mostly on level ground - to Camacha (2,296 ft, 700 m), where a stop will be made for refreshment before doing the second part of the walk to Rochão.
You will then return to the pier by bus.

Situated in the grounds of a former private house, the gardens are host to a profusion of plants and flowers, from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island’s temperate climate. The village of Monte (1,677 ft., 550 m), is world known for its many fine properties and gardens, perched on a hill above Funchal; its 18th-century twin-towered-church is a landmark throughout the city. In the centre of the high altar of the Church stands the statue of Our Lady of Monte credited with being the source of many miracles, also inside you will find the tomb of Charles I, last Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who died in exile in Madeira in 1922. From here, you return back to port.

A new project called “Arte de Portas Abertas” (Art of open doors) is a public art programme aiming to transform Funchal’s old town into a permanent outdoor art gallery by displaying over 200 works of art by guest artists, painted on the doors of Rua de Santa Maria. This colourful project is an attempt to revitalise this part of town and make it more culturally significant for both locals and tourists.
You will continue by foot with a visit to the local market “Mercado dos Lavradores”, where an infinite variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, as well as regional products can be found. Madeira wine is well-known for being a favourite wine “toasting” option for America’s Founding Fathers. To begin with, the island of Madeira served as a well-known port for various shipping routes going to and from the New World. England had specific legislation in place (“The British Navigation Act”), that ultimately prevented the exportation of wine (and other goods) to British colonies in the New World, unless it came on a British vessel and originated from a British port of call. However, the island of Madeira was exempt from this pesky law and Madeira wine became a “staple” wine on the vessels bound for the American colonies.
Once arriving, you will visit the vineyards of a traditional working Quinta, a unique property that still possesses the characteristics of a farm or estate as they once existed in Madeira. Bought by John Blandy in 1826, the first Blandy to visit Madeira, and the person to have established the now well-known Madeira wine business, this rural oasis is located near the centre of Funchal. This estate houses rich flora gardens and centenary old trees collected from all over the world, as well as a vineyard, whose produce is used for Blandy’s Madeira wine.
You will continue your tour to The Blandy's Wine Lodge. You will enjoy a private guided tour which covers the making of barrels at the Cooperage, ageing in the Canteiro, the transformation of grapes into Madeira wine, satinwood storage vats, and includes a visit to the private museum with unique items from Madeira wine history. The wine lodge was once a 17th-century monastery, it now provides an ageing store for thousands of litres of the highest quality Madeira wines, namely Blandy’s Leacock’s, Cossart Gordon and Miles.
After your guided visit with one of the Madeira Wine guides, a lecture will be given. Finally, to complement this experience, you will enjoy tasting Blandy’s Madeira wines accompanied with some local snacks.
Then, you will re-board your coach and join your ship, a 15-minute drive.

On September 19, 2021, a new volcanic crater formed in La Palma. The volcano, previously known as Cumbre Vieja, erupted, completely changing the landscape west of the city and creating the new volcano Tagojaite.
Tajogaite is the name given to an area of the island of La Palma belonging to the municipality of El Paso and located south of Los Romanciaderos, near the Montaña Rajada. The toponym appears frequently from the eighteenth century onwards in local documents related to land ownership, but its use dates back to the time when the Benahoarites inhabited the island.
Hiking on the newly named Tajogaite - cracked mountain - you will almost reach the crater, walking along black ash paths lined with Canary pines.
From there, impressive views of the lava flows and the Aridane Valley await you.
Once back on the bus, you will go to the Mirador de Tajuya to enjoy more amazing views of the volcano and lava flows, before returning to Santa Cruz.

Tenerife, the largest island in the Canaries archipelago, is a destination full of contrasts. A place with exceptional landscapes as 82% of the municipal territory of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is considered a natural area, dominated by a volcanic cone of 3,718 meters named Le Teide.
From the pier, board your coach for a one-hour scenic drive that takes you inland through the lushly forested area known as La Esperanza where you will have the opportunity to stop twice to take pictures of the surrounding natural environment.
You will then reach El Portillo, the natural gateway to the circular mountain range, Las Cañadas. This is where the volcanic Mount Teide is located, whose summit reaches a height of 7,500 metres above sea level, regarded as the world’s third-tallest volcanic structure. The visual impact of the site is all the greater due to atmospheric conditions that create constantly changing textures and tones in the landscape and a "sea of clouds" that forms a visually impressive backdrop.
Your tour then continues to the rock of Mirador, known also as el Dedo de Dios, which translates as "The Finger of God". A photo stop will be made at this incredible geological formation.
Finally, you will drive back to your ship, enjoying further breath-taking views of the lovely island of Tenerife on the way.

From the pier, you will board your coach and start your journey at National Park Timanfaya and the famous Fire Mountains of Lanzarote.
Upon arrival, you will enjoy a guided tour of the park. The park’s lack of wildlife creates a surprising air of calm and silence. It´s hard to imagine what a volcanic eruption would be like, but the land is still bubbling beneath the surface and the craters and the active volcanoes will amaze you. Islote de Hilario is one of the most original islets, or kipukas, in the Canary Islands, and it stands out from other islets because it is covered by the pyroclasts of the Timanfaya eruption of 1730-1736. However, the main characteristic of this geological attraction is the presence of thermal anomalies. This area registers the highest thermal anomalies in the Canary Islands.
Then, you will experience the recorded testimony from a well-known priest from Yaiza, who lived through an eruption that affected a large part of the south of the island. You will attend geothermal demonstrations and will gain an appreciation for the power of the active volcanoes under your feet.
After admiring this astonishing natural beauty of the national park, you will appreciate the El Golfo viewpoint overlooking El Charco de los Clicos, a green lake formed by a volcanic crater and located in the middle of a black sand beach.
The journey back to the pier passes by the beautiful Vineyards of La Geria, where of course you will have the chance to taste typical Lanzarote wine. This wine producing area is a few miles inland; the wall of volcanic rock divides the apparently barren field but, within these walls, the wine flourish under a layer of Picón (porous lava granules which absorb the dew at night and provide constant moisture to the plants).

From the pier, embark your coach for a one-hour scenic drive to the picturesque village of Haria, known as the “valley of a thousand palms”. Surrounded by lush green fields and colourful meadows, you can admire whitewashed houses, shady palms, and tropical flowers line its narrow streets.
You will then continue to Mirador del Rio, Lanzarote's most famous viewpoint. This former gun emplacement has been converted in 1973 by local artiste Cesar Manrique into a recreational and ecological location. From the balustraded café or the vantage point of the balcony, you will have some of the most breath-taking views in the entire archipelago. Standing 500 metres above sea level, you can see the entire northern coastline, the straits of El Rio and Las Salinas del Rio, the island's oldest salt plains which have been used since Roman times.
Next, you will reboard your coach and travel to Los Jameos del Agua. This massive open-air cavern is part of a long volcanic tunnel that was formed 3,000 years ago by molten lava. Due to gasses pression, the tunnel collapsed in some parts creating large openings. In 1968, Manrique had the idea to turn these openings into a tropical garden with a pool, a bar and a 600-seat auditorium.
Upon arrival, you will climb down a stone staircase into the first cave known as Jameo Chico. You will continue along a pathway crossing a lake filled with tiny albino crabs, a rare and delicate marine crustacean. Following the footpath, you will reach Jameo Grande, a huge open-air cave lined with tropical plants and a turquoise pool.
After visiting the auditorium, you will reboard your coach and get back to your ship.

Your last stop will be La Casa del Queso, a goat farm, for a visit and a tasting of some more delicious local products.
